Independent Study
At Aldersley High School, we believe that independent study is an integral part of a student’s education. Relevant homework provides significant benefits for secondary school pupils and supports them in crucial skills such as time management, organisation and independence.
Supporting your childs education at home
Independent Study supports the teaching and learning in the classroom and should challenge each student to continue to make excellent progress.
Research states that homework is most effective when it is relevant to the content students are taught in school. Tasks that are lengthy and complicated have been shown to be less effective than frequent, short homework where feedback and testing are present.
The independent study provided to students will retrieve knowledge taught in lessons.
KS3 and KS4 Core Subjects
For English, Mathematics and Science, students will be set homework weekly, consisting of:
- 20 minutes per week per subject (KS3)
- Homework will be completed on a designated IT platform
- Tasks will focus on consolidating key knowledge and skills taught in lessons
This approach is designed to encourage regular practice while keeping workload balanced and consistent.
Non-Core Subjects
For KS3 non-core subjects, students will complete:
• One piece of retrieval homework per half term, per subject
Students will:
- Be provided with a clear set of knowledge (on Teams and paper-based)
- Be given a series of questions based on the knowledge
- Be tested in a lesson on this content later in the half term
Retrieval homework is proven to strengthen memory and understanding, helping students to recall and apply what they have learned more effectively.
Homework Deadlines
Deadlines for homework to be completed will be posted regularly on Teams for students to access. Support with accessing platforms can be accessed in school.
