It has been a fantastic start to the Upper School this half term, with our Year 9, 10 and 11 students working exceptionally hard. It has also been a fantastic half term in regards to celebrating the results of last year’s Year 11 cohort, as we are now one of the top 3 schools in Wolverhampton, with a Progress 8 score of +0.49!

We have already rewarded lots of our students within the Upper School with certificates, badges and rewards points to commend their attendance, effort, progress and completion of homework, and thoroughly enjoyed their celebration assemblies this week which rewarded students for their hard work over the whole eight weeks.

Students were rewarded with certificates and prizes including pairs of tickets to the Dunstall Fireworks

We have also celebrated the success of our students who applied to be part of the Student Leadership Team, with lots of students now being recognised as Prefects of the school and team members on a number of committees including the Student Council. We anticipate that they will be fantastic additions to the team led by our Sixth Form Head Boy and Head Girl and look forward to sharing their developments further with you during the course of academic year.

Year 11 students have been engaged in their intervention sessions and are all determined to achieve their target grades when they sit their examinations in May. Year 11 have also sat their first set of mock exams this half term, and we have been incredibly proud of them for their focus and commitment: we already have 22 students who have made positive overall progress, and it was lovely to see them enjoying a special lunch this week to celebrate.

In addition to this, all Year 11 students and their parents were invited to an ‘Excellence Evening’ at the beginning of the half term. During the evening, students were able to collect personalised packs of revision materials; speak to a number of HE and FE providers at the Careers Fayre, and attend a selection of seminars based on health and well-being; how to be successful in GCSEs; how parents can support their students and information and guidance on applying to be part of the Amethyst Sixth Form. The evening was a success and we look forward to supporting our Year 11 students throughout the rest of the year in making their next set of choices for the future.

Year 10 have also had an impressive start to the year: their focus and determination to succeed in lessons has been exemplary and we have been very proud of their commitment to succeeding outside of the curriculum too. Our Year 10 Hospitality and Catering group produced beautiful cakes for the Macmillan Coffee Morning, raising £170 for the Macmillan Nurses and our Year 10 boys have been particularly committed to their sporting successes, including one of our High Attaining students who gained first place in the recent Wolverhampton Cross Country competition.

Lots of Year 10 students also took part in their Bronze and Silver Duke Of Edinburgh Awards and despite the colder conditions, thoroughly enjoyed navigating Carding Mill Valley and sleeping in tents underneath the stars.

What a view during a recent Duke of Edinburgh Expedition!

Finally, our Year 9 students have made a superb start to their GCSE and Vocational courses: it has been lovely to see students already making progress within the Upper School and students have been keen to develop their knowledge further through their attendance at cookery masterclasses and literature sessions after school. Our Year 9 students are already earning medals and badges in their recent cross country competitions and enjoying being part of teams such as the recently winning Football team.

We are excited about returning for the second half of the Autumn Term on Monday 5th November, and look forward to continuing to celebrate the success of our Upper School students and focus on their progress and attainment across all subjects.

Enjoy your half term break,

The Upper School Team.
